Our social media accounts are managed by the communications team. We’ll always make it clear whenever a post has been written by the commissioner.

RSS feeds

You can use our RSS feeds on your website, but please use the right format and attribute them to us.

Monitoring accounts, responding and replying

We try and respond to as many replies or comments we can, however this isn’t always possible.

Our social media accounts are not currently monitored twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. It is also easy to miss posts in busy social media traffic.

Our social media pages are run by the communications team who will sometimes need to do some research to find out information for you. This means that it might sometimes take a while before we can get back to you.

Liking and following

Please don’t be offended if we don’t ‘Like’ or ‘Follow’ you on social media. This doesn’t mean we don’t like you or are not interested in what you have to say, it’s just that the numbers can get too high for us to manage.

We sometimes follow or like people who provide information that is pertinent to our work (for example government accounts, local media, and our partners) or those whose information we can pass on for the benefit of many local people.

Occasionally, we’ll also try and lend our support to local and national campaigns such as International Women’s Day and This Is Abuse.

There will also be times we’ll need to like or follow an account in order to take part in conversations.

Just because we like or follow someone, retweet or share their information, it doesn’t mean that we endorse them.

Sharing and retweeting

We try and share or retweet information that we think will be of interest or use to our followers, however please don’t be offended if we don’t retweet something you want us to.

As a trusted organisation, any sharing of information could be seen as endorsement of a particular view, individual or organisation, and it’s important that we remain impartial and protect the reputation of the office and the commissioner.

Blocking and unfollowing

If we block your account, this will probably be because you’ve followed or liked us purely to promote a product or service, or you’ve contravened the rules of a particular social media space (see Moderation).

If for some reason we unfollow you, it might just be that we’re going through a sort-out or simply cutting down on numbers. If you see that we’ve unfollowed you, please don’t take this a sign of personal rejection!

Moderation

Most online communities have their own rules and guidelines, which we will always follow.

Where possible, we will rely on the measures of protection and intervention which the social networking site already has in place (e.g. against illegal, harmful or offensive content), for example by flagging comments or alerting them to any breaches of the site’s terms and conditions.

We also have some of our own rules.

We reserve the right to remove any contributions or block users that break the rules of the relevant community, or any of the following moderation guidelines:

  • be civil, tasteful, polite, and relevant
  • don’t post messages that are unlawful, libellous, harassing, defamatory, abusive, threatening, harmful, obscene, profane, sexually oriented or racially offensive
  • don’t swear or use hate-speech
  • don’t break the law or condone illegal activity.
  • don’t post content copied from elsewhere, for which you do not own the copyright
  • don’t post the same message, or very similar messages, more than once (also called “spamming”)
  • don’t publish yours, or anyone else’s, personal information, such as contact details*
  • don’t advertise commercial products or services
  • don’t impersonate someone else or falsely claim to represent a person or organisation
  • for propriety reasons, don’t use this website or our social media spaces for party political purposes
  • don’t discuss ongoing cases and investigations because we can’t host or comment on this type of content
  • be on-topic and relevant – please try and stick to the topic being discussed! And don’t spam!
  • be respectful – don’t be mean to people! Don’t write malicious or offensive comments, and don’t make personal attacks
  • don’t incite hatred in the context of race, religion, gender, nationality, sexuality or any other personal characteristic

*If your enquiry needs us to have your personal details, please use our more formal contact channels rather than social media or the comments system.

Comments on our website

We’d love to hear from you on the comments facility available on some pages of our website. However, please bear in mind the following:

  • We pre-moderate most of the comments we receive. This means that your comment may not be published live straight away or at all.
  • The decision to publish these comments is at our discretion and we reserve the right to suspend the comments facility at any time.
  • Any views expressed by third parties are solely theirs and not necessarily endorsed by us.
  • We will adopt a light-touch moderation policy where possible but please bear in mind our guidelines when submitting your comments.
  • If we’re seeking views, we may wait until all views have been received and considered before we publish a response.
  • Although we’ll always read your comments, we won’t always be able to respond. It’s usually our communications team that responds to comments but, where possible, we will try and involve other relevant members of staff and the commissioner. They will use their own name and make it clear that they are commenting in an official capacity. Our officers should comment using the format firstname@GMPCC.
  • If you’re 16 or under, please get your parent’s permission before using our comments facility.

We moderate the site during normal working hours and will do our best to get your post live as quickly as possible. We don’t pre-moderate because we want to censor you. We just want to make sure that content is relevant, on topic, and not offensive or abusive.

We’ll normally approve comments as long as they meet our moderation guidelines.

Libel

Please take care not to make libellous statements. In law this means a statement that lowers the reputation of a person or organisation in the eyes of a reasonable person. By publishing such a statement we can both get into serious trouble. We will therefore take down any statement that could be deemed to be libellous.
